The Power of In-Person Networking

Networking has changed a lot during the last decade with the growing popularity of social media and online platforms such as Zoom and TEAMS but these digital platforms do not have the same impact as good old fashioned in-person networking.  Business is relational, whether it’s consumer focused or business-to-business focused, the time and effort put into building those relationships pay off in the long run.  What are the biggest benefits of in-person networking?

  • Grow your personal brand – many times, people buy from people, not companies

  • Strengthen your business referral network – people who refer business to you are selling on your behalf

  • Get career advice and support – learn tips and best practices from other salespeople

  • Build your confidence – networking skills are beneficial for obtaining referrals and also closing new business

Where is the best place to network in-person? This is going to vary by person.  The key is to find a group that works best for your needs and be consistent!  Organized networking groups will have a regular schedule (weekly, monthly, etc) and full participation will allow you to have maximum return investment of time and/or money.  You’ll get an even better return on your investment if you assume a leadership role or take part in a committee.  A few of the more popular in-person networking groups amongst our agent family are:

  • BNI (Business Network International) – a business referral network that meets weekly and limits each chapter to one industry representative per group https://www.bni.com/

  • Chamber of Commerce – it’s not enough just to be a registered member of your local chamber of commerce, you need to attend their events and participate in their programs

  • Women’s Council of Realtors – this organization has over 250 networks nationwide and you can participate in their events and even become an associate member https://www.wcr.org/

  • Rotary International – one of the largest service organizations in the world and deeply embedded in most communities, the rotary is a good way to network with other business owners in your local community https://www.rotary.org

  • American Marketing Association – this national organization has local chapters nationwide; in addition to the opportunity to attend networking events, you’ll also learn some great marketing tips and tricks https://www.ama.org/

  • State Realtor Associations – every state has a realtor association and even if you are not a realtor you can participate as an associate member or take part in some of their events

In addition to attending networking events, you can showcase your warehouse and office space by hosting a local event.  Reach out to your Regional Sales Director for some ideas and tips on how to host your own event. There are hundreds of groups and associations out there, find one that works for you and commit to it!
